If you asked two years ago, Sharon Chicoski would tell you she was embarrassed to go outside, wasn't able to enjoy fun summer activities with her son and was upset to be missing out on so many of life's opportunities.

Sharon had considered bariatric surgery for several years prior to having the procedure. She was overweight, and as her medical problems began to build — high cholesterol, sleep apnea and diabetes — she believed more and more she needed to do something to take control of the situation.

Though she knew it wasn't going to be a simple, quick fix, in 2009, Sharon decided she was ready to make a change, starting with having weight-loss surgery. "Everything about me has changed since I've had my surgery. I eat healthy and I feel better, so I have more energy to do the things I was missing out on before. Although it was an adjustment at first, once you get into a routine, it's as though nothing has changed," said Sharon.

One of the biggest changes Sharon has made has been to increase her level of activity. She and her friend, who also had just had a weight-loss procedure, joined forces to motivate each other to get moving.

"Just after the surgery, my friend would have to drag me around the track," Sharon laughed. "But we kept going, and after a while, I was walking 10 miles a day, and I felt great."
